11+ Preparation

The 11+ is a selective entrance exam used by Kent grammar schools and many independent schools to identify academically able pupils. In Kent and surrounding areas such as Medway and Bexley, the 11+ typically takes place in September of Year 6 and assesses four key areas: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning.

Whilst English and Maths largely reflect the National Curriculum, Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning are not taught in primary schools. As a result, most children benefit from specialist 11+ tuition to help them understand these unfamiliar test formats and develop effective exam techniques. We also support pupils preparing for specific entrance exams for independent schools across the Kent region.

Although the 11+ is not compulsory, we understand that Kent is a highly competitive area, and many parents seek tuition to help their child build confidence, resilience, and the academic skills needed to approach the papers calmly and successfully.

At Happy Owls Tuition, we use a range of carefully selected materials to support our pupils’ progress. Alongside regular preparation sessions, we run realistic mock exams closer to test time, so children can experience full exam conditions in a supportive environment.

We generally recommend beginning 11+ preparation in Year 4 (ideally Term 3), as this allows time for steady progress without unnecessary pressure. However, we are always happy to discuss tuition at other stages depending on your child’s needs.
