Word of the Week: Encouraging Curiosity and Confidence in Language

Following on from our popular Word of the Week feature on Facebook, we wanted to share a little more about why this simple activity can make such a positive difference to children’s learning.

Vocabulary isn’t just about knowing lots of words — it’s about understanding their meaning, using them appropriately, and feeling confident experimenting with language. Our Word of the Week encourages all of this in a fun and accessible way.

Recently, we introduced the word “persevere.” We explored how this means continuing to try, even when something feels difficult. This is such an important mindset for children, especially when they face challenges in school or in their learning.

We love seeing how children engage with the Word of the Week — whether they write their own sentences, use the word in conversation, or simply remember it later on.

For parents, this can be a lovely way to support learning at home without needing to set aside formal “study time.” A quick chat about the word over dinner or on the school run can make all the difference. We plan to continue sharing our Word of the Week every Wednesday, and we hope you’ll join us on this journey of growing confidence, curiosity, and creativity in language.
