Preparing for SATs: Tips for Parents and Students!

SATs can feel like a big milestone in a child’s primary school journey, especially in Year 2 and Year 6. While they are an important part of the education system, it’s also important to remember that they are just one snapshot of a child’s progress. In fact, they are more important for our schools than pupils themselves but it is totally understandable that children wish to perform to their best ability and demonstrate how far they have come and what they have achieved over Key Stage 2.

Preparation is therefore key — but this doesn’t mean endless worksheets or stressful revision sessions. Effective preparation is about building understanding, confidence, and good learning habits over time.

Here are some helpful tips for parents and students:

1. Keep learning consistent, not overwhelming

Short, regular practice is far more effective than last-minute cramming. Little and often helps children feel secure rather than panicked.

2. Focus on confidence as well as skills

A child who feels calm and capable is far more likely to perform well. Praise effort, celebrate progress, and remind them that it’s okay to make mistakes — that’s how we learn.

3. Make learning part of everyday life

Reading together, talking about new words, practising times tables in the car, or solving puzzles can all support SATs preparation in a natural way.

4. Use mock tests wisely

Mock exams can be useful for familiarising children with test formats, but they should be used in a supportive, low-pressure way. At Happy Owls, our mock sessions are designed to build confidence, not create anxiety.  Our tutors also build upon knowledge already known, and gaps to fill, to ensure maximum coverage and that children feel confident in their ability – as well as exposure to the types of questions that will come up.

If you’re feeling unsure about how best to support your child, you’re not alone — and we’re always here to help guide you through the process.
